The business office has been
working hard to reform the drop for non-payment process to reduce some of the
unintended negative consequences. For Summer 1 we would like to eliminate the
drops for non-payment that occur after the semester has begun. This will reduce
or perhaps even eliminate a lot of the need for late registration requests that
have become a burden. In general this is better for the students as well as
reducing the work of the chairs during this busy time.
However, one of the positive
benefits for students that came from this drop was that it dropped students who
hadn’t paid and weren’t attending classes. Students often think that failing to
attend class and not paying is the same as officially dropping a class. In
order to assure that this change won’t have a negative impact on those
students, we need to make sure that all faculty teaching summer 1, give
a grade of NA to all students who fail to start the online coursework within
the first two weeks. This is not to punish any student, but rather it
relieve the financial burden if they think they have dropped the course. As you
make selections for who is teaching in Summer Session 1, can you reinforce this
important message to the faculty who are teaching as well as to the chairs? We
will continue to send reminders at the appropriate time in Summer Session 1 but
it is critical that all faculty do this and in the appropriate timeframe.
If this is successful we can do this for future terms as well. Both Liz Greaney and Ernest Cartledge are copied on this message if you have questions and I am happy to answer what I can.
Thanks so much for helping to
deliver this important message.
John
